Job Seekers You Are Fooling Yourself If...

Job Seekers You Are Fooling Yourself If... In honor of April Fool’s day, the Career Collective is tackling a few important and timely questions: How are you fooling yourself about your career /job search? What can you do about it, and how to avoid being tricked by common job search blunders. I come in contact with people every day who are fooling themselves into thinking theyve got this job search thing down or refuse to accept the new realities of todays job search. Unfortunately they continue to fool themselves day after day and those days often turn into weeks, months, or even years as they continue to remain unemployed. If you arent getting interviews your search isnt working. Are you fooling yourself and are you guilty of any of the scenarios below? You are expecting to get calls for interviews because you posted your resume online. Despite all the advice and statistics to the contrary, job seekers continue to spend most of their job search time posting on job boards. Its fine to apply for positions that you are truly qualified for online. But is is imperative that you create alternative plans for getting your foot in the door at those employers. Talk to recruiters, find someone in your network who may know someone at the company, or use tools such as LinkedIn or Jigsaw to find a potential decision maker at that company. Posting on the job boards with thousands of other applicants will rarely get you noticed. You think keywords in resumes are a nice to have. More and more recruiters and hiring managers are using applicant tracking systems to source candidates and they may never find you if your resume doesnt contain relevant keywords. Stop debating the importance of keywords and start putting them in your resume. Applicant tracking systems are getting more sophisticated and they are here to stay. You think the format and presentation of your resume is inconsequential. I often write posts about the importance of what I call resume blingthe use of visuals such as graphs and charts and in some cases color or images to prove impact or differentiate oneself from the pack. This idea continues to scare people who think this isnt proper resume etiquette because it will make their resume look different. Ahsorrylooking different is the point. You think networking is just brown nosing. I get these comments about networking all the time and even hear from people who say they would never stoop to trying to build relationships with people as part of their job search. They are missing the boat on the concept of giving to get and being authentic. People want to do business with people they know. Take a general interest in peoplealwaysand they will be there to help you when you need an introduction. You think online networking is not necessary for you. Sometimes my senior level clients tell me they are very well known in their professional circles, so LinkedIn is not necessary for them. They may be well known, but many hiring managers and recruiters expect to see a consistent online representa tion of who you are professionally.Take a long hard look at your search strategy. Are you making progress or just fooling yourself? Your words may come back to haunt you

Your words may come back to haunt you I couldnt believe my eyes when I read this post from Resume Bear, 20 Things Job Seekers Shouldnt Say on Twitter. From I just smoked pot at work to I slept with the boss last night to I lied on my application, suckkkkkas!, the list goes on. Not sure what people are thinking these days, but one thing is crystal clear to me, they will be polishing off their resumes soon. Do they think that no one in their company is on Twitter or Facebook? That no one else has any online savvy? Sheesh! People are listening. We hear stories of people getting fired all the time for what they write on social networking sites. Maybe some are saying it as a joke, or to impress friends, but whatever the reason, their boss is FOR SURE going to find it and reprimand them (embarrassing!) or fire them (good luck!). So, even if you have heard it time and again from friends, colleagues, the news, whatever, you better think twice before you post how you stole from the company, are still hungover from last night, or are reading your boss mail. Because its not going to have a happy ending.

Reasons Why Resume Consultancy Is Done

Reasons Why Resume Consultancy Is DoneResume consultancy is a term used to describe the collection of information about job seekers. A resume consultancy company is an organization that provides this type of service. These companies offer such services for various reasons, some of which are mentioned below. Here, you will find out that the main reasons why resume consultancy is done are outlined in the following lines. The first reason for which this kind of service is done is to ensure that potential job seekers get a proper application. The reason why this is done is because otherwise, no one can have a proper application for employment. So, the aim of the hiring process is defeated and this is the reason why this is often done.Secondly, the intention behind this type of service is to provide opportunity for new job seekers to get the job they have long wanted. Another reason is to give opportunity to job seekers who have not been hired in the past to get hired. Also, there are thos e who have not applied in the past and hence want to get this work for themselves.Thirdly, this service is often done for the purpose of making people aware about various skills needed for the job. This is so because many job seekers want to know how the people who will be going to perform the tasks or how the job will be done in the most efficient manner. By the use of these types of services, such knowledge is given to job seekers. Finally, it is also done because the size of a resume is needed to be unique to make the job hunting process more effective. This is so because otherwise, people who are job hunting have to spend time in creating their own resumes, which usually do not lead to success. In order to have a resume that is successful, there are various tips that must be followed. A good starting point for doing this is by creating a clear and consistent definition of who you are, what you have done in the past and what your goals are. Also, these are your best assets, do not hide them, but disclose them to the recruiter or company that you are applying for the job.Resume consultancy helps a lot when it comes to getting a good job. It also increases your chances of getting the job. If you are interested in this service, contact your local consultancy firm.

Aerage Number of Jobs for American Workers

Aerage Number of Jobs for American Workers Feel like you’re bouncing around between jobs? Have no fear, you are hardly alone. A typical young adult in the U.S. has held an average of 7.2 jobs by age 28, new research shows, which is roughly equivalent to having one new employer each year. The study, released last Friday by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, examined a nationally representative group of 9,000 young men and women born between 1980 and 1984. As you’d expect, the job change rates slow as young adults age, but not much: “Individuals held an average of 3.9 jobs in the four-year period from ages 18 to 21. The number of jobs individuals held dropped to 2.7 in the three-year period from ages 22 to 24, and then dropped further to 2.5 in the four-year period from ages 25 to 28,” the report said. Read More: Who Are the Major Credit Reporting Agencies? In other words, even into their late 20s, young adults held onto their jobs, on average, for only about 18 months. A “job” in the survey is defined as a period of work with a specific employer; being promoted at the same place of employment would not constitute a new job in this research. Surprisingly, the rapid rate of job change doesn’t vary much among gender and doesn’t change much among men despite their level of educational attainment. On the other hand, women who spent more time in school changed jobs more frequently. “Women with a bachelor’s degree held eight jobs from ages 18 through 28, compared with 5.6 jobs for female high school dropouts,” the study found. Read More: What Is the Average Credit Score? People with lower levels of educational attainment see their jobs end quicker. Female high school dropouts held jobs for the shortest duration, with 52% of jobs ending in less than six months, for example. Job change rate didn’t vary much among race. Hispanic or Latino individuals in the group held 6.5 jobs during the 10-year span while African Americans held 6.8 and whites held 7.5. Education levels didn’t affect whites or Hispanics but did affect African-Americans. Members of that group held only five jobs when failing to earn a high school diploma, but 7.1 when earning a college degree or higher. Of course, the better question is: Are people job hopping more in today’s economy? Job hopping data isn’t actually that easy to come by. The Bureau of Labor Statistics does not have data on the number of jobs held during an average American’s lifetime, for example, despite persistent conventional wisdom that adults today will undertake multiple careers â€" up to seven! â€" before they retire. Read More: Discover it: Review However, a similar study released last year offers some helpful context. Baby boomers born between 1957 and 1964 held 11.7 jobs from ages 18 to 48. They also held 5.5 jobs from ages 18 to 24. There was no 18 to 28 calculation, so an apples-to-apples comparison isn’t possible. But data on the boomers suggests millennials aren’t job hopping that much more than their parents.

3 Good Reasons to Quit a Toxic Job Without a Backup Plan

3 Good Reasons to Quit a Toxic Job Without a Backup Plan Quitting takes courage especially if you dont have a Plan B. Usually, its not advised to quit before you know what youre going to be doing next. But therbeie are some times when quitting, even without a backup job, is just necessary. When the job youre currently working is a toxic one, you might not have time to come up with a plan before you have to get yourself out of there. One FGBer is grappling with just that, and she shares her struggle with the Fairygodboss community on the discussion board.I have been at my job for about one year and eight months, and it has been a total nightmare, she says. Bit of background I am a successful investment professional with a Masters degree from a top 10 B-school, 13 years of experience and multiple designations, and I have always succeeded in every job I have had... until now. I find myself in a situation where I am in an abusive relationship with my job. They gaslight me, use me as a p awn (the partners are fighting for future leadership) and have basically set me up for failure since day one.She says that she has never felt so disrespected. It is a toxic situation that I am trying to leave but struggling, she goes on. I know that is has affected me personally and this is coming out in interviews (and also personal relationships). I want to quit with no backup but that scares me so much. Anyone have any experience with this? I am single, so I rely on myself financially, but I am mostly worried about how this will look to future employers.Of course, the Fairygodboss community has chimed in with advice to help. Heres when its OK to quit your job without a Plan B, according to FGBers who have been there, done that.1. Leave if its hurting your health.I entered into an abusive relationship with my last (not current) employer I welches fresh out of school and eager to begin my job in my field of choice, says an anonymous FGBer. Unfortunately, because of the high rate of toxic environments/burnout in my industry, I welches lead to believe in a stick it out attitude until things got better/I got through the impostor symdrome phase. Well guess what? TOXIC is TOXIC is TOXIC I left with NO Plan B as I was dreading waking up in the morning, gained 30 pounds in the time I worked there (four months) and watched two employees hired after me walk out.She says she was having panic attacks before work and waiting for her daily berating from her boss. She knew she just had to leave.Leaving was scary I stayed unemployed for six months, she says. I was terrified when trying to find jobs the longer my unemployment lasted, but I kept pushing. My current employer didnt even ask about the gap just about my skills and how I handle problems. It wasnt until they asked why I left my job that I just answered my employer wasnt a good fit for me, and then I asked about management style/work-life balance. Turns out they knew my former employer and understood her to be toxi c. I love my place of work now. I am so happy to be where I am, and I have grown so much from taking that risk I look forward to work everyday, which is something I never believed to be a real thing. If it is killing you, you have to leave for YOUR sanity and health.Other FGBers agreed.I couldnt agree mora says Shay00. Ive done this Ive had no backup plan It is not peaches and cream when searching for those months before you find your next job but you can and will find something else People will tell you dont leave its what we are taught, but HEALTH nothing is above your health. Panic attacks when you start huffing and puffing while driving, making moaning noises as you are walking in giving the long fake smiles. You sit down and your heart is dancing. Its time to go Anxiety is something that can happen even when you arent doing anything, but you dont want your job to trigger it. There is life after your job, I promise2. Leave if its affecting your self-esteem.Feeling the same fea r you do, I stayed at a previous lage until it got so bad I was suicidal, says Jen Stephens. The longer I stayed, the more my mental health deteriorated, making even looking for a new job all but impossible. My mental health was so bad it was affecting my physical health. My self-esteem got so low I was convinced no other company would want me which is a textbook abusive relationship. Realizing that I was leaving that job, or my life I quit.Stephens got a new job just six weeks later. It was a massive pay cut, but so very worth it, she says. Im not saying quit right now, but please, please, please do not let it get as bad as I did. And scary as it is, once it reaches a certain point, quitting a horrifically toxic job is what you need to do to find a new one so that you are out of that toxic environment and can use your energy to find a new job instead of it all being used to deal with the toxic job.Other FGBers also note the importance of maintaining some semblance of sanity.Your h ealth and well-being are more important, an anonymous FGBer adds.3. Leave if you have the funds.Maybe you dont have a Plan B, but if you have some money saved up to survive until you figure one out, calling it quits is much easier. This is why best practice is to have three to six months of your fixed expenses in an emergency fund, says finkelmurphy. Some clients keep a separate FUF (Forget You Fund). Whatever you call it, start squirreling into it BEFORE you pay any bills so that you can pull the plug. Many FGBers in the community seem to deem emergency funds important.Do you have an emergency fund that is not retirement that is six months ( winter is coming), and do you have the ability to find other employment? FGBer Flossy also asks. Tender a resignation... If you are concerned about clients, offer to structure a notice that supports them but be strict on what you wont tolerate. They can choose to accept, negotiate or refuse your terms. Im hoping you have documented the toxic work culture. If you offer notice, you arent killing your career. Move on... Now lesson ladies This is why you have an emergency fund. Everyone needs six months outside your retirement fund of FU money. Most others agree.Johanna Tatlow asks a bunch of questions regarding funds and savings Do you have funds to live off of for a few months? Does your area have a strong gig economy such that you could stretch your savings with driving Uber or some such thing until you land your next position? Do you have a list of companies you would like to target, and possibly even names of connections or vermgen connections there? She says that, sometimes, you just have to jump ship before you go down with it.Just make sure you at least have a life vest with you or a boat to swim to, she adds.--AnnaMarie Houlis is a feminist, a freelance journalist and an adventure aficionado with an affinity for impulsive solo travel.
